Storage Saga

I'm a storage machine. Can't stop. For the past few months (!), I've been working toward a more sane collecting existence. This has extended to my real home as well. We have decluttered and pared down, so I have been reluctant to add new miniatures to my collection. This has meant selling one of my houses (a Brio "Chalet" from 1963) and pushing myself to take stock of everything I have collected since 2008.

I'm probably about 3/4 of the way there. The biggest step was buying a ton of storage boxes from Michaels, which I managed to get on clearance, and filling then systematically. We bought a label maker, and I put it to use!

The next milestone will be arranging to get an old refrigerator and freezer hauled out from the basement. This will free up some needed space for another work table.

All of this is a bit of an excuse why I haven't been posting. The Horrorstor book cover had me occupied until April, and then I jumped into storage mode.

Let's hope I get out...!

  1. Wow, it looks so organised. I should take a leaf out of your book and store everything in a better order. Love the last photo - looks like a mass sleep over =0)

    1. All the modern dolls are very happy now that they are freed up from their more vintage buddies, who have moved to the drawer below. All of your latest projects are so inspiring -- love reading about your progress!

  2. I do the exact same storage...those boxes go on sale at Michaels all the time! They are great so you can see easily what's in each box.

  3. I saw that the storage boxes are 12x12, but how deep are they? Can they store chairs standing upright?

    1. At Michaels they have some that are pretty deep to hold larger items. Look in the paper lane for them.

    2. Yes, I got some of the deeper ones as well, which are approximately 5" high. I use those to store very large furnishings or large collections of furnishings (I have a whole Bodo Hennig box). Most of the storage boxes I got are 2.5" high, so they are best suited to storing chairs on their backs, which I prefer. You can see them clearly and they all don't topple over when you move the boxes;)

  4. Hi Christine! Just wanted to commend you on getting so well organized. I did a bit of that myself this past summer and it is such a mental burden that you don't even realize weighs so heavy, until you begin getting rid of stuff and/ or take the time to re-organize it. Your system of the clear plastic boxes is the Great, especially now that you have labeled them. It is one thing to get organized but it is another when you can't find your stuff after you have done it, but your system looks like it actually WORKS!
    Congratulations! :D

  5. You are an inspiration! I too am in storage mode simply because I don't want to have to sell any houses! I bought a lot of rolling storage cards to put under tables. I think I will label them the way you have. Keep sharing so I won't lose encouragement and fall behind with the mission to organize. LOL

    1. I'll do my best to keep sharing. I think the key for me has been to try to do it consistently so that I don't lose momentum :)
